About the Artist
Jack Lawton
Jack is a self taught artist of many degrees. He was born in
Washington D.C. in 1970 and then moved west to Montana
at the age of 14. He attended college at the University of
Montana studying Psychology. More interested in
discovery than education he left school and travelled the
western states. He had worked a wide variety of jobs from a
graveyard attendant, a bicycle messenger and a professional
skydiver before settling in Santa Cruz in 1994. He started
metal work in 1995 receiving private instruction from an
artist in Mill Valley, California. Quickly developing a
desire to create, he bought his first welder and began
making furniture and sculpture. He has now been working
with metal for over 10 years.
In addition to metal work he took an apprenticeship
building fine boats at Santa Cruz Yachts in 1998. He moved
up to wood shop manager by the year 2001. Building
custom yachts taught him the finesse that was necessary
bring his metal work to the next level.
Currently, Jack co-owns SculptureTech in Watsonville,
California with Aaron Van de Kerckhove. Sculpture Tech is
a custom metal fabrication shop specializing in cutting-edge
metal applications in modern architecture and beyond. He
continues to design and build water features as well as
metal sculpture.
Forever challenging himself Jack went back to school and
now holds a bachelors degree in film technology from CSU.
Video and film production is a new avenue for artistic
expression. He is currently writing and producing a TV
show about a metal shop in Watsonville and the adventures
involved in building such a business. Check your local
